Karate coach 'chuffed' to receive MBE after five decades in sport
From STV 16 June 2012

A karate instructor who has been involved in the sport for nearly 50 years says he is "very chuffed" to receive the MBE.
Hamish Adam has been Scottish, British, European and World champion in the course of his long career as well as Scotland team coach.

The 65-year-old, from Penicuik, Midlothian, was a member of the British squad in 1975 that became the first international team to beat Japan.

He also founded the Meadowbank Karate Group in 1970, based at Meadowbank Sports Centre in Edinburgh.

Now chairman of the Scottish Karate Federation and an eighth Dan, Mr Adam said his honour in the Queen's Birthday Honours was "great".

I wasn't looking for any reward but it's nice," he said.

He said he felt lucky to be able to turn his hobby into a job as director of sport for Scottish Karate and chairman of the Scottish Karate Federation.

It's been really, really good for me," he said. "I've loved it. I wouldn't change it for the world."
