Matt Handley – Assistant Northern Regional CoachI started to learn karate from 9 years old under Colin Crowther 4th Dan and Angie Webb 3rd Dan, who were both Bushido Ryu instructors and England representatives.

I practice the art of Bushido Ryu and gained my Black belt in August 2000, under Vic Charles MBE & Colin Crowther. I was very interested in competing particularly in the fighting side of karate.  I attended many competitions around the world from been a young age. I followed in my instructor’s footsteps and was selected to fight for England in the -65kg section in January 2006 I was selected to represent England at the Dutch Open, and then was selected by head coach Ticky Donovan OBE and assistant coach DR Wayne Otto OBE to represent England in May 2006 at the European Championships in Norway.

Shortly after this I was picked for the Northern Squad at the Regional European Team championships, which was held in Paris.  Late in 2006 I was invited as a wild card to fight at the last 10K Karate Clash. I have been in many English & British Championship Finals.

After my own competing Success, I channeled my energy in to my coaching and own club Halifax Sport Karate. I have travelled up and down the country coaching the young talents as they start their journeys through Bushido Ryu and along the way it has been very successful, there has been multiple Yorkshire, English, British, British International titles and international titles.

In 2013, I was awarded Coach of the year at the Calderdale Sports Awards, for my achievements in karate.  Many of my students have also gained Calderdale sports awards including Disability Sports Person in 2011 & Junior Sports Person in 2015.

In 2015 as a part of my personal development I completed an IQ working as Close Protection Level 3 certificate & AOFAQ First Person on scene intermedia Certificate, Also Firearms, Unarmed Combat Certificate, advanced driving.

I have always wanted to better myself and gained WKF Certified and accredited kumite coach in 2016 in Croatia, this was awarded by WKF President Antonio Espinos.

Along with the founder of the style Bushido Ryu I opened my own association Bushido Ryu Association opened in 2016.

In 2017, I was awarded my 4th Dan from the English Karate Federation for services to Karate.

Also in 2017, It was an honor to be made a English Karate federation Northern Regional Coach, by National Kumite Coach Paul Newby.
